Chapter 13

Twenty minutes later, Hunter reluctantly escorted Winter into the shuttle hangar. Her face was pale, but she held her head up high. Like always, she had on her leather jacket with her hands jammed inside the pockets. He would have liked to hold her hand and give her reassurance, but after their love-making, she was back to her stand-offish self. He couldn’t figure her out and wished he could have spent more time with her, but time was a luxury.

Sol, Hoss, Agnes, and Drake waited for them next to the shuttlecraft. Hoss had decided upon a smaller party and only wanted a team of specific abilities; he didn’t want to bring too much attention.

Ian and Odi were no fools, but they’d be hunting for dragons––not a set of twins with unusual powers.

Hunter sighed and rubbed the back of his knotted neck. Aria was the last place he wanted Winter to go. Ian was down there, and he was pure, carnal evil. He’d sell his very soul to become King of Zalara.

In fact, he had.

Hoss smiled as they approached. “Good, we’re all here.” He raised his eyebrow. “I thought I was going to send security for you.”

Winter’s cheeks turned five shades of red.

Protectiveness puffed up in Hunter’s dragon, and he hissed, almost daring Hoss to make another stupid remark. Hoss’s eyes glowed and smoke steamed out of his nose.

Hunter immediately put his arm around her stiff shoulders and pulled her close, getting a loud hiss from her twin brother. But luckily, Winter didn’t pull away.

Agnes elbowed him in the ribs. “Hoss.”

Hoss lost his challenging scowl. It was amazing how Agnes could quiet Hoss’s beast. Hunter just hoped he and Winter would share the same teasing relationship. His life had so much seriousness and loss.

Winter needed some happiness to melt her cold heart. He’d love to spend the rest of his days bringing laughter into her eyes and cracking her ice wall of pain.

Hoss gazed at each one of them. “Czar Konan will be sending out a welcoming party to meet us, and then we will be escorted to Gancaster, the Czar’s and Czarina’s home. It’s where the Hadril Stone is protected. Or at least it was.”

Winter frowned. “What do you mean?”

“Someone has already tried to steal the stone once before,” Hoss said. “Even though only the Czar’s most trusted people were inside Gancaster.”

Sol shoved his hands in the back of his jeans. “So, I take it that’s where my sister and I come in?”

“Yes, it is,” Agnes answered. “Your mother has confidence in both of you.”

“So, you keep saying,” he grumbled.

Winter stiffened next to Hunter.

He glanced down at her. “You can do this. I believe in you.”

But he wasn’t sure. Winter and Sol had only tried one time, knocking him on his ass. They were about to meet the real thing.

Winter clamped her jaw tight and stared straight ahead while her brother snorted loudly. Hunter gave Sol a deep scowl, but it didn’t seem to bother Winter’s brother in the slightest.
